Cured Ham steaks

We recently started a subscription box for our local customers and its been a big hit! Very exciting for you and us.

Customers receive 10 pounds of pork a month and at the end of a year they get about the same as they would if they ordered a whole hog. But you get a little at a time and we help you ration it all out and stretch your budget as much as possible.

Each month they receive a pound of bacon, 2 pounds of sausage, 2 pounds of ground pork and a package of cured ham steaks plus about 4 more pounds of other pork too.

We all know what to do with bacon, but sometimes you may not always be able to know what to do with the others.

Today we will talk about cured ham steaks. This is one of my go to meals when I don’t know what else to cook for supper. You know when it's 4 pm and everyones starting to ask what’s for supper and you have no clue? Yep, it's great for those nights!   It is a great comfort food but it also thaws out quickly and can be paired with different sides.

For supper we like to just put on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees while I cook the other sides. This takes about 20 minutes. It's done when it gets a little crispy on the edges and slightly browned. In the meantime cook up some potatoes for mashed potatoes, and corn or green beans.

For breakfast, cook the same way in the oven or you can fry in a skillet. Just cook until the fat on the edges gets a little crispy (the best part in my opinion). Fry up a couple farm fresh eggs in the oil and you're done in less than 10 minutes.

Another great breakfast is to use biscuits or english muffins and make a sandwich with a small piece of cooked ham, fried egg, and a slice of cheese.  Make a few of these ahead of time, store in the fridge and just warm up before school or work. When cooked like this you can really stretch your meat over several meals or feed multiple people at a time.

We all know to use ham hocks for ham and beans. But this is even better! Chop up your cured ham steak into ½”-1” pieces, brown in a dutch oven then add in your dried beans and seasonings, cook several hours until the beans are done. This gives you more flavoring and each bite has a piece of ham in it.

Feel free to leave your own ideas in the comments and share your favorite cured ham recipes.
