do you need a half or whole pork

Do you need a whole or a half hog to put into your freezer?

You're looking to switch to locally raised pork, but it can be hard to know how to get started.

This is the best way to save money on your pork while enjoying the great tasting pork all year long.

Let's break down how much meat to expect from each and how much you would need to eat per month to eat through it.

First pork will last a year or more in the freezer. This is just a general guideline of when to get it eaten by, plus it makes for a good basis of our calculations.

An important thing to remember is that hanging weight is the weight of the pork carcass, this is what the locker goes off of for your processing fee. Retail weight is what you get back, this is after most of the bones are cut out and everything is cut and packaged to your specifications.

Whole hog will have a hanging weight of around 150 pounds and put about 115-120 pounds of pork into your freezer.

Half hog will have a hanging weight of around 75 pounds and give you about 55-60 pounds of pork into your freezer.

Break that down further and in order to eat through a whole hog you need to eat 10 pounds a month. Around ten meals worth of pork a month, or just over 2 meals a week. ( like breakfast and supper)

A half hog is eating 5 pounds a month or five meals involving pork. Or roughly once a week you have one meal with pork.

If you don’t know where to start, start with a half hog. It is the same price per pound for a half as it is a whole and we offer this several times a year. Then you can stock back up after a few months and it's a smaller cost to pay each time if you do need more.
